“Schism” Video by ESSES
Oakland, California dark post-punk/deathrock quintet ESSES released its sophomore album, Bloodletting for the Lonely, on August 06th via Atakra Records (US) and Bat-Cave Productions (Poland).
Today, support the release of their album, they have dropped a video for “Schism.” Miss Kel describes the song here:
“The song centers on the concept of two who are one, a conversation between these two people, the tug of war that occurs when one tries to become more dominant than the other, living like this, and how art can be a healing force. The album deals with mental health, trauma, symbolism, and memory and this last song on the album is the keystone that brings it all together to finish the story – like the last chapter in a book.”
ESSES History
ESSES were formed in 2014 and embrace their deathrock and post-punk while nodding to their punk rock roots. The band’s live performances are surreal and dark, certainly something to behold. ESSES are precisely what you would expect from a lineup that was or is part of such seminal bands as Altar de Fey, Black Ice, The Phantom Limbs, Red Voice Choir, and The Holy Kiss.
ESSES released the LP No Light In This Fire in 2016 on Atakra Productions and the Offering EP, on Near Dark Records, in 2018.
Bloodletting for the Lonely
Bloodletting for the Lonely focuses on mental health, memory, and trauma. The album tells the story of two beings coexisting in the same body. It starts with “The Source” and ends with the single released today, “Schism.”
Bloodletting for the Lonely was recorded by Skot B. at Kempton House in Oakland, California. The album comes in standard 12″ vinyl and a limited release box set of color vinyl and Inside the Schism – Selected Writings of ESSES. The 40-page booklet features selected writings from all three albums by ESSES, journal entries detailing the lyric writing process, art created by Kelly Correll, and behind-the-scenes pictures of the band by Kevin Brown.
