New single, “As The World Looks Down,” from Bored Shorts

Sydney, Australia’s Bored Shorts started in 2017. Dom Hoban and Will Blackburn started collaborating 10 years prior. They worked on bedroom Garageband tracks that they thought no one would ever hear.

Dom and Will eventually moved to Sydney, Australia, enlisting friends Charles, Nick, and Ashley to round out the band. The band is now a five-piece jangle-pop indie act that released its first single in 2017, “Day & Age.”

Since their debut EP, Looking Up, the group has been working on their first album, Way Off!. Since their inception, Bored Shorts have consistently produced light-hearted indie-pop while pushing forward in new and exciting directions. Way Off! is a clear culmination of that growth and represents that unique creativity. The debut album was announced on September 3rd and is available on limited orange vinyl from cult label Spunk Records.

As The World Looks Down Single

As The World Looks Down is the first single from Bored Shorts’ debut album Way Off!

“This is our attempt to see the world through the eyes of someone whose actions, lifestyle, and values we don’t agree with,” the band says on the single. “In this instance, it was a real piece-o-work ex-boss, but more broadly, it’s me asking the question: is it better to consciously do something wrong for your own gain, or to be so naive to the world around you that you don’t even realize what you’re doing is wrong. It’s real ‘big picture stuff.”

“We wanted this to be a track that everyone can get involved with because we can probably all relate,” the band continues. “So, at one gig, we put iPhones around the venue to capture everyone singing the group chant and promised to put those recordings on the album. I don’t think those voice memos ever did make it on the album, but I’m sure they’ll see the light of day eventually.”

As The World Looks Down Lyrics

The song’s lyrics are Will’s attempt to see the world through the eyes of someone whose point of view Will disagrees with. In this case, it was an ex-boss.

“It’s about asking the question: is it better to consciously do something wrong for your own gain, or to be so naive to the world around you that you don’t even realise what you’re doing is wrong. It’s real “big picture” stuff.”

Bored Shorts typically finish their shows with this song; so it is a lot of fun getting the audience to sing along

What does Bored Shorts sound like?

The band says they drew inspiration from classic 80s Australiana garage rock, fitting that they are now on Spunk Records.

What is the Bored Shorts writing process like?

Dom and Will are the primary songwriters. They actually start by writing songs separately. They could be completely fleshed out demos or just tracks off of their phones, but at that point, then enlist their bandmates to help write new parts and fill out the rest of the song.

The current album was created in a makeshift studio built on the south coast of Sydney. It was painstakingly crafted over 5 days with the help of Bowen Shakallis. The recording was mostly recorded live, with overdubs later.
