Sally Dige Unveils Tearfully Heartfelt Single

Sally Dige — New Single and Video for “You”

Sally Dige is a musician and audiovisual artist based in Berlin. On the heel of her last two romantic tearjerkers, “It’s You I’m Thinking Of” back from January 2020 and, more recently, “I Will Be the Sun for You” from this past March — Dige pulls on our heartstrings again with “You.”

Her latest single, “You,” was released on July 6th, 2022, under her own label, Dige Records, and follows in a similar tonal vein as her last two singles, both thematically and instrumentally.

Dige’s sound has shifted and grown quite significantly over the years from “italo disco-inspired electro, to post-punk, to ethereal new romantic,” according to the artist. Keeping true to her goal to constantly evolve and experiment, Dige’s recent work has taken on an artful folk influence.

Utilizing synthesizer heavily on her last album, Holding On, motivated a move towards acoustic instruments. “The natural form of self-rebellion was to pick up instruments that didn’t need electricity to function, and play with strings and the hands again,” says Dige.

You

The track is poised with a breezy quality, despite evoking tearful-heartbreak. Sally Dige can be seen playing the lute and guitar, solitary in a summer field, as she reminisces over a past love. The song is warm — visually and in bittersweet, yet fond remembrance. The video conjures nostalgia as Dige retraces her footsteps in Berlin, dances through memory, and perhaps symbolically, shines a mirror on complicated and forlorn emotion.

The setting sun elicits a sense of lost time that can’t be regained as one or both parties have already moved on in different directions. But, in visual allusion to seasonal cycles, perhaps Dige has tried to find a semblance of peace in the natural order of things; a small acceptance in that even though it hurts to swallow, sometimes things are meant to work out in a way beyond our control, effort, or strength of feeling. In coming to terms with and exorcising this internal journey, Dige has created a beautifully memorable and heartfelt piece.

Official Video

The video for “You” premiered on July 13, 2022. Dige is notoriously hands on with all aspects of her work. The musician, who takes great enjoyment in the visual side of things and views it as an important aspect of her art, both wrote and directed the video. She additionally contributed as Director of Photography alongside Sanne de Neige.

Personally, I’m eagerly excited to see what a fully realized, future album in this direction will look like and will be prepared with a box of tissues at the ready.

Lyrics

I had a dream that you held me again
Under the clouds
Oh that summer in Berlin
We always loved so hard, fought some more
From so sweet to cruel
Don’t wanna say that I’m happy without you
‘Cause it’s not true

You (It’s only you)

What would I say, if you asked if I loved you? – I do
And when I see you pass on the street I feel so blue
I dream of what I would say, if you waved at me
Would I act all surprised?
Loving you was never unsure
‘Cause I do

You (It’s you, it’s you, it’s you)

Time has flown by
And we are older, oh now I heard you’ve settled down, with a family as well
I’ll keep the memories dear:
The letters we made
Or dancing in the room
We were so wild and so crazed
But I loved you, I still love you

You (it’s you, it’s only you, it’s you, it’s you, it’s you)
