Spectres’ Hindsight Releases November 5th, 2021
The post-punk band has released 4 Eps, one a split with Arctic Flowers, and are now releasing their 5th LP, Hindsight.
The first single, “Tell Me,” off of Hindsight gives me strong New Order vibes. Down to the heartbreak-strewn lyrics mixed with an upbeat synth-pop side and more icy post-punk. Spectres have refined their style over the years, from more dark punk leanings to more new wave and polished post-punk inspired outings for Nostalgia and Hindsight.
Wayne Moreheart directed the black and white video for “Tell Me.” It certainly fits that eighties post-punk aesthetic. Moreheart has directed other videos for various artists like Girlfriends and Boyfriends, Actors, and Leathers.
Spectres, Brief History
Spectres were started in 2004 by Brian Gustavson and Steve Hanker. The band was initially started as a studio project on Vancouver Island. Brain sang and played bass while Steve plays drums.
Brian has stated that his writing is rooted in the paranormal, the past, and a general disdain for politics.
Spectres have always been compared to 4AD and Factory bands and even more anarcho-punk focused bands. The band themselves have always just said they were a dark punk band. And they certainly lean into the DIY ethos of punk rock and the community and politics of the scene.
The band were influenced by such bands as Adolescents, The Sound, Modern English, The Observers, The Wipers, The Mob, Killing Joke, and New Model Army.
Tell Me Lyrics
Feelings I have that just can’t go away
Whatever you’re doing I want you to stay
In all of these times what’s it like to be strong
What is it like to go on?
Tell me
Why it’s over and done
Tell me why we can’t carry on
Tell me how to kill and to cure
Tell me, tell me
Visions I’ve had from the top of despair
Whatever you’re doing I’m already there
Wrong all the time what’s it like to belong
What is it like to go on
Tell me
Why it’s over and done
Tell me why we can’t carry on
Tell me how to kill and to cure
Tell me, tell me
And in the aftershock, they’ll never know
And when the cold cries out I’ll always call
Just like the Action Man we’ll never fall
Like life’s illusions that go on and on and on
What’s a boy to, What’s a boy to do
What’s a boy to, What’s a boy to do
What’s a boy
