Pinch Points premiere their new single, “Am I Okay?”
Pinch Points New LP Process
Pinch Points are a Melbourne-based post-punk band. Their new LP, Process, will be released on March 18th, 2022.
The record was recorded by Anna Laverty, who has worked with Courtney Barnett, Nick Cave, and The Peep Tempel. Process is an ambitious dive into driven post-punk empowerment. The album includes 10 songs dealing with catastrophic bushfires, gendered violence, and mental health struggles to First Nations incarceration and deaths in custody. The lyrics are clear, direct, and concise while remaining nuanced and empathetic.
I love the clarity of the vocals. The voices are as sharp as their guitar riffs. Pinch Points are funny, astute, and consistently relatable.
Process Content and Context
Pinch Points find it essential that their music be a vehicle for change. Process is a dialogue on structural collapse, the systemic failures and baked-in inequalities ravaging ecosystems, the lacking mental health system, the gig economy, and all aspects of our currently challenging lives.
The title Process also recognizes a collective expression of empathy and shared grief. In Process, Pinch Points finds consensus from the experiences of their four individual. Pinch Points embody music-making as an act of community, prioritizing the band’s shared belief in the music scene as a real-life platform for connection, strength, and solidarity.
Pinch Points Sound
Pinch Points have been compared to Wire or other well-known acts like Devo, Regurgitator, Eddy Current, and The B-52s.
Their live sets are packed full of energy. Pinch Points play at a brisk pace but not so frenetic that it threatens to get derailed. Their sets lack sugary ballads or indulgent psychedelic roundabouts. They are a straightforward post-punk onslaught. Pinch Points are visceral and defiant.
“Am I Okay?” Lyrics
You know you look good on paper,
But you don’t like what you read,
That’s not what I see.
You might not be convinced, but you matter;
You matter to me.
I know that feelings come and go
But if they don’t, I want you to know
That I’m here – but if you need,
I’ll give you space
So just take a breath
It’s good to ask yourself, ‘Am I okay?’
Look after yourself – look after yourself
It’s good to ask yourself, ‘Am I okay?’
Look after yourself, look after yourself –
Look after yourself for a change!
I know the world is fucking crap
But you didn’t cause that –
So give yourself a hug.
You’re more than what you think you are;
So far you’re not a bug, you’re a feature:
Evolved from a single-celled creature,
You just need to know
That you’re worth everything
And improve the world you’re living in
So please just take a breath
