We’re Not Alone Release – Chain Cult
When it comes to post-punk and music in general, I believe the best music stands for something and is compelling as art alone but holds fast to ideals. Chain Cult exemplifies the DIY ethos and anarcho-punk approach to post-punk.
On August 13, Chain Cult released their new 2 song 7″, We’re Not Alone, on LA VIDA ES UN MUS DISCOS. This 7″ comes after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Shallow Grave in 2019.
Who is Chain Cult?
Dino: guitars
Jason: bass, vocals
Vangelis: drums
Chain Cult is from Athens, Greece. They play an idealistic, anthemic, dark driving post-punk, definitely for fans of early Cure, Bleakness, Spectres, Belgrado, and Diät.
Dino: “We’ve all been listening to post-punk for a decade or so, parallel to hardcore, and it was always in the back of our head to do a post-punk band. We like mid-tempo, but we are more energetic. We don’t wanna be darkwave, like Dracula darkwave style.”
Chain Cult Politics
Jason: “We’re part of a specific scene, a distinct scene. We don’t play at clubs, we play at specific spaces with a specific political stance, no fascists allowed etc.”
Chain Cult also talks about their personal struggles, but being political and taking a stance is part of the very fabric of the band. They also help set up shows, organize benefit events, play in other bands, and Dino writes a punk fanzine called Winterview. In Athens, shows are organized in squats, DIY spaces, big universities, or outdoor places.
Feminism and LGBTQ+ inclusion is also an important part of the DIY culture in Greece and for Chain Cult. They are happy to see changes day to day, with more women and LGBTQ+ people getting active within the community.
What does the future hold for Chain Cult?
Last year Chain Cult was supposed to play some shows in the United States. For obvious reasons, that tour didn’t happen. Hopefully, they make it across the pond in 2022. We look forward to seeing them play live in the future, but for now, their recorded material is incredible. Be sure to grab a copy of We’re Not Alone.
