TR/ST Premieres Piercing New Dance Single
TR/ST, the musical alias of Alfons Robert, has blessed us with a new track for the first time in several years with the release of “The Shore.” Known to take his time writing between iterations, TR/ST’s last output was the acclaimed Destroyer Vol. 1 & 2 in 2019.
Robert definitely prides quality over quantity — experimenting, exploring, and reflecting with pause as needed. Perhaps, behind the scenes, this is in part gives way to the magic present in his work and what leads to TR/ST having a bit of a cult following. As a personal favorite, I can’t imagine not loving anything he creates in great fondness, but “The Shore” is objectively terrific.
Production
Out on June 22, 2022, “The Shore” was co-produced by Nightfeelings, mixed by Damian Taylor, and mastered by Heba Kadry. The track itself is incredibly multilayered and forward-driven. The usual atmospheric quality of TR/ST is maintained, but beneath the sound we all love can be heard a sharp addition of pulsing techno and highly charged, dance-fueled electronic.
Vocal Journey
Robert has previously been known for not having the clearest vocals. As in the lyrics tended to be more abstract and were less directly important themselves, serving predominantly as an expressive vehicle. Vocals came forward on Destroyer, displaying a tenderness and vulnerability as he expressed themes of shame, longing, and despair.
Here again, complicated feelings are explored as TR/ST guides us over the rocky course of a past entanglement and recounts a compelling narrative of connection and difficult parting. Memory is conjured through his emotive vocal style and acutely pain-tinged harmonies.
