Shygirl releases the first single and corresponding video off of her coming debut album Nymph
English-musician and DJ, Blaine Muise, aka Shygirl, has generated quite the excitement in the time she’s been musically active. Partly due to the variable nature of her sound within deconstructed club, and additionally contributed to by her larger-than-life persona and avid media creation — there’s definitely a marked curiosity and hunger from fans to see what she does next.
That said, in somewhat traditional club style, Shygirl has thus far only been putting out singles and remixes. I think I speak for everyone when I say that we would have been happy to keep taking whatever she decided to give us. But after a sold-out tour in the UK and North America, Shygirl announced her anticipated debut album, Nymph, will release this coming September.
Firefly
The first lead single off of the coming album, Nymph – “Firefly” aired on May 11th. From DJ to rapper, R&B hyperpop baddie, crooning songstress accompanied by string orchestra, to now soft ethereal 90s iconesque — there doesn’t seem to be much Shygirl can’t sonically achieve.
Catching us off-guard with an unusually bittersweet ballad, beautifully melancholic and instrumentally lush — Shygirl captures a uniquely emotive combination of achingly-longing, wistful, and somehow still subtly beaming with a quiet smile. Perhaps through comfort in nostalgia or hope for the future, there is a demure confidence that radiates through her narrative.
Deconstructed Club
Falling under the Deconstructed Club genre that is innately fusion-based, Shygirl’s music is wide in the sound and influence that it fluctuates between.
Deconstructed Club tends to rest on a Cartesian plane of varied intersectionality; often consisting of artists of marginalized identity, exploring facets therein through a new lens, done frequently via optics of futurism and technology — paired and intertwined with a fusion of diverse genres particular to the artist. There is a noted emphasis on inventiveness, overarching for the collective genre and personally in one’s own canon; whether that be in regards to sound, style, or art direction, as aesthetics usually play an important role.
Shygirl’s Sound
Mercurial and not easily pinned, this genre-intrinsic quality tends to be mirrored in the artists who fall under its umbrella. As for Shygirl, her sound combines aspects of club, hip house, contemporary R&B, and grime — with hyperpop, cinematic soundscapes, and futuristic trance.
Midnight Edition
The first video edition for “Firefly” features a dreamy blue, cool-toned, Y2K palette. Somehow she’s done Naughties arguably better than the decade could have produced itself.
Lyric Excerpt
I’m right here
Like I been
All those other times
Just waiting for you
To give me a sign
Would be so long,
Long
Watching you
Easy
To break away
Make a little change
It’s been so nice
To pretend
We could be together again
I’m a fool
And I know
The truth
Pretend we could be
Together again
Dawn Edition
True to expected Shygirl-modus operandi, there is already not just one video, but a secondary visual-accompaniment and lyric video to go with the new single. “Dawn Edition” features Shygirl along the scenic, southern cliffs of Beachy Head, Eastbourne.
